When the First World War broke out, the suffragettes suspended their campaign for Votes and joined the war effort. Two pioneering suffragette doctors, Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson, set up two military hospitals in France despite opposition, yet their medical and organisational skills meant that they were asked by the War Ministry to return to London and establish a new military hospital on Endell Street, Covent Garden.
