Job Details:

The Museum of Military Medicine is the designated Corps museum for the Royal Army Medical Service and its antecedents, along with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. It maintains artefact and archive collections relating to the history and heritage of the British Army’s Medical Services and serves as an international centre for research into military medicine.

The museum is seeking two new Museum Assistants to join the museum team. The Museum Assistant role works flexibly across the museum to support a wide range of activities. Post-holders will assist with visitor services, front-of-house, retail, and collections management, to ensure that the museum provides a consistent high-quality experience for all visitors and stakeholders. Reliability, energy, and a strong administrative focus are key qualities to bring to the role

The new Museum Assistants will be part of an active programme to help transition the museum from being a subsidised concern ‘behind the wire’ to a resilient self-sustaining commercial enterprise, and will be joining the Museum of Military Medicine at an exciting time as it prepares to relocate.

The position is offered as a fixed term two-year contract in the first instance.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

1. To assist with the accessioning, cataloguing, and rationalisation of the artefact collections and manuscript archives within the museum.

2. To assist with digitisation and manuscript storage projects.

3. To assist with the administration relating to the conservation of items in the collection.

4. To respond to museum enquiries in a timely fashion.

5. To fulfil shop orders and retail enquiries in a timely fashion.

6. To help with behind-the-scenes tasks, including administration, events set-up, and supporting our volunteers.

7. To provide a welcome and occasional general commentary to civilian and military visitors

8. Any other tasks as reasonably required.

Personal specification:

Essential

1. Have knowledge of the management of artefacts and archives.

2. Have previous museum experience.

3. Be able to interact with the general public.

4. Ability and willingness to work flexibly, out of normal office hours and off site if required.

Desirable

1. Have experience of working in an accredited museum.

2. Relevant heritage or museum qualification.

3.  Have experience of MODES and CALM.

4.  Knowledge of museum cataloguing systems and standards.

5.  Have experience working with volunteers.

6. Educated to degree level.

Additional Work Elements

The post-holder is based at Keogh Barracks in the first year.

Standard working hours are 37 per week.

Some occasional weekend working may be requested

Some lifting and carrying of objects, display equipment, loan boxes.

Some work in a cold environment.

Due to our location, your own transport would be advantageous.
